Traveling with Family
To provide information concerning the process of how Soldiers reporting to OCONUS assignments should receive briefings to apply for Command Sponsorship 90 to 120 days prior to departing the losing command.. Many Soldiers are not made aware of the Command Sponsorship requirements when being assigned to Alaska. Soldier’s are given a short suspense to process the paperwork to allow them to have concurrent travel with all Family Members, thus resulting in the Soldier being separated from Family Members and having to request Deferred travel after arriving to Alaska. Soldiers put on orders to Alaska must request Command Sponsorship to ensure all Family Members have the proper medical and educational requirements available locally if they are enrolled in the Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP). Command Sponsorship
There are two ways to get Family and household goods to the overseas assignment:
1. Family Travel: Family travel must be applied for prior to leaving their last duty station. Losing unit must send the EFMP screening and DA 4787R to the overseas unit so they can get Approval/Disapproval from the screening or housing office. Once done, losing unit will cut orders stating Concurrent Travel is authorized and will list all dependents by name.
2. Command Sponsorship & Deferred Travel: This is applied for at the gaining unit if unable to obtain prior to leaving last duty station. Once at new duty station, you must obtain EFMP screening. You will then receive command sponsorship and deferred travel upon approval.
